WHAT IS NOCTURIA? | HOW TO AVOID NOCTURIA?

Getting out of bed, and waking up in the middle of the sleep to pass urine more than once a night is called Nocturia. This situation is highly vexing because it disturbs you in your sleep and also you have to face an awful coming morning or probably the whole day. Here in this article, you can get a few points that may assist you to get up and pass urine less frequently after you sleep.

1. Before Bedtime: Number one is to check how much water or other liquids you take prior to going to bed, especially the last two hours before you sleep. If you are taking liquids during this period please reschedule and stop consuming water, juice, or other liquids before sleeping. In case you are on some bedtime medicines please don’t drink too much water while taking them. Drinking too much water before sleeping will make your bladder full during your sleep and you have to get up earlier in the middle of your sleep to pass urine. Therefore, please don’t drink for at least two hours before you sleep.

2. Bladder Irritants: Certain edibles called bladder irritants if taken before bedtime might also cause the bladder to become more active. This method will be quite helpful in case you cannot void your bladder completely in one attempt. This process is useful to void your bladder entirely and, perhaps, take a sound and more sleep until your bladder becomes full again.

4. Diuretic Medicine: If you're taking a diuretic or a water pill, consult with your primary care physician regarding the timing of that water tablet. You certainly shouldn't take it before going to bed since it will not allow you to get a peaceful sleep all night. Morning time is also not good for taking it as it will store some of the water in the legs and feet resulting in a greater output of urine at night. So, ideally, midday is the best to take it however that should be after you have consulted your physician beforehand to ensure that it’s appropriate.

5. Diabetes: All patients with diabetes need to keep their blood sugar levels under control, especially at night. All the blood sugar that is more than normal accumulates in urine in the bladder and causes discomfort due to which you get up frequently at night and can’t have a sound sleep.

6. Excessive Salt: Reduce the amount of salt you consume particularly when you suffer from congestive heart failure or if your legs or feet swell up due to edema since this might deteriorate such condition, resulting in a higher volume of urine.

You will see after some time that the compulsion to pass urine subsides. At first, it becomes rather intense but then it subsides a few moments later, allowing going to the toilet normally. This exercise first disconnects and then connects again the link of the brain with the bladder, informing it to wait a little to meet the need to pass after some more time. A study was conducted concerning kegel exercises. It was observed that the frequency of nighttime awakenings of the patients of nocturia was decreased by 0.4 times to 1.2 times following continuous kegel exercises for three months. It is quite difficult to describe the exact meaning of 0.4 times but roughly it means that you may get sleep for one more hour at night through these exercises. You will be able to get not only better sleep at night but also your living conditions concerning nighttime sleep will get better which are both vital and significant. I'm sure you may have had the experience of a horrible night's sleep after which your following day was also a horrible one.
